If you want to join a school outside the normal admissions time – perhaps because you are moving house – then in most cases you apply direct to the school, though local authorities can have helpful information of which local schools have spaces.

To answer the question: yes, secondary school admissions will require a proof of address for 11+ to year 7 applicants. Additionally, if you wish to transfer schools during the academic year, you will still be required to provide proof of address.

When should I start looking at secondary schools?
You can’t apply for a secondary place until your child is in Year 6, but parents of Year 5 children are welcome to attend open days. If there are grammar schools in your area, it’s definitely worth looking at schools at the start of Year 5 so you can decide whether you want your child to sit the 11+.
